have a chance, iowa, colorado, florida. pennsylvania's not gone for a republican for president since reagan and bush and when bush sr. carried pennsylvania, he also carried california and illinois and new jersey, places where they would hunt romney down with dogs. this is not like the map he needs if he wants to win pennsylvania. i don't really wish him well, i don't wish him any ill. but he's wasting money. >> what's the strategy, john avalon. had and in will had had had you're in ohio tonight. is the push in pa a a sign of weakness in ohio? john king's talking about he feels it's neck and neck, different than he felt in the last election, but do you think that? >> president obama has had a small but steady lead in ohio. we think the romney campaign is looking at a saturation point. there's not much more than you can do except get out the vote. with money, the with the candidate's time more importantly, i think speaks to change the strategy because the current strategy isn't working. they're looking for alternate paths to 270. states where it looked like romney was pulling ahead in.

and honest voting process at the ohio secretary of state and florida governor have done everything they can to discourage voting and that's something that we have to be very, very careful of. this has to be a fair election. we've got to be sure that it's a fair election. we're going to be very attentive to that. but i think if it's a fair election we're going to win. there's a lot more enthusiasm for the president than there was two or three months ago. people are really getting excited about this president. the president himself has gotten more exciting, which is nice to see as a passionate person running for office and the third piece is that the republicans have made major missteps. mitt romney -- it's almost impossible to see what mitt romney stands for. he's gone from a severe conservative to a modest moderate and the truth is people think he want to be president because he wants to be president with no particular program or philosophy. that's not really -- you can't win the presidency that way. >> governor, to that way n. terms of the great wall of obuscation, it's probably worth noti

the unemployment rates, nevada, 11.8%. colorado still 8%. wisconsin, ohio, new hampshire, virginia, florida, iowa. look at iowa, 5.2%. it's essentially full employment in iowa but they are concerned about debt, deficit and the quality of jobs you are getting. let's start with the ohio jobless rates. no gop candidate won an election without winning ohio. ohio makes presidents. today, 7% is the unemployment rate, less than when the president took office. that is better than the national average. they have been adding manufacturing jobs. not as many by any stretch of the imagination that they lost. look at florida and the trend of the jobless rate in florida. it's exactly where it was when the president took office. still higher than the national average. it has been coming down. housing is still a major issue here. in virginia, 13 electoral votes, jobless rate is low now. a 5.9% in virginia. but, it's still higher than when the president took office. essentially flat in virginia. it's going to be interesting because superstorm sandy could have an effect. power outages there. we don't know what tues

of these other numbers. colorado obviously important. florida, virginia, certainly ohio. but look at these numbers. this is from the new nbc "the wall street journal" poll in iowa obama 50%, romney 44%. much closer in new hampshire. obama 49%, romney 47% within the sampling error. wisconsin similarly 49%, 46%. these states are pretty important as well. >> every state. all of these battleground states are very important. there are different permutations to get to the all important 270. you look at a tiny state like new hampshire which is so close, four electoral votes, wolf, but it's the last place mitt romney is going to visit before he goes home to boston to vote. the president's going to be there. this could be the difference in the electoral college. if you look at iowa and wisconsin, two other numbers you just threw out there. iowa and wisconsin very important part of the president's firewall in the midwest. for example, should he lose florida, iowa and wisconsin very important. same thing with ohio. both of them -- both those states important to both of these candidates. and
